Environmental Benefits
There are several environmental benefits associated with Wind Power:
- Wind Power is a proven technology. It does not contribute to climate change, air and water pollution, habitat destruction, or the production of toxic wastes.
- Wind resources are numerous and there are many sites around Canada and the world that are feasible for Wind Power.
- Generating power from Wind will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. These fossil fuels produce large amounts of Greenhouse Gas and other air emissions which cause climate change, acid rain and overall air pollution.
- Wind power will allow us to meet our goal of reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions. Every 1,000 MW of wind generation will reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 1.2 million tones.
- Wind Power creates no significant environmental problems. It has a very limited impact on wildlife, with wildlife mortality rates caused by Wind Turbines to be less then that caused by an average house cat. Wind Turbines usually coexist with other land uses, such as agricultural, as they only occupy a 1%-2% footprint of total land leased.
